Dr. Jelte Bos
foto Jelte E. Bos  - holds a M.Sc. degree in physics (VU, Amsterdam, 1984). His Master’s thesis concerned eye movements. He then got a teaching position at the VU, and prepared a thesis on the diagnostic value of ocular pupil movements, resulting in a Ph.D. degree in medicine (1991). In 1994 he moved to TNO Human Factors (Soesterberg, the Netherlands), where he is (still) working on the effects of motion on human well being and performance in general, and on motion and attitude perception and motion sickness in particular.

Cybersickness
Looking at motion pictures of any kind without moving yourself may yet be sickening. In case this concerns computer images, this is generally referred to as cybersickness. An important aspect concerns the importance of the organs of balance with which we “feel” physical motion. This importance is demonstrated by the fact that people in whom these organs are not functioning, like in totally deaf people, do not get sick from motion at all. Paradoxically, this includes visual motion. In this paper I will further elaborate on this and on other aspects that may explain why this is so.
