Game writing: Putting stories into games and gameplay into stories.
Ideally, the two elements of Game and Story should build upon each other; a game with a story is more engaging, and a story told in a game is more immersive. Computer technology and human imagination are working together to tell stories in a way that is new and entirely different. In this session, which will be a combination of presentation and discussion, I will walk through the processes of writing a story as part of a game development project. Topics will include storytelling for different game genres, the role of a game writer in a design team, and some ways to tell stories that embrace the non-linearity of gameplay. Traditional writing and storytelling, cinema, television, and other media all have useful elements. By borrowing from them and adding what is uniquely our own, we can better understand the complexities, challenges, and opportunities of this growing art form. |
