Gameplay design patterns is an approach to analysis and design of games. The patterns describe recurrent design situations and design choices in all kinds of games. The current pattern collection contains almost 400 patterns ranging from basic goal and goal structure patterns such as Chase, Evade, and Eliminate to more esoteric pervasive gameplay design patterns, for example, Hybrid Space. The lecture gives an overview of the patterns approach and uses patterns for massively multiplayer mobile phone games as detailed examples. The lecture ends in some notes about the future of gameplay design patterns and a call for participation in a collaborative pattern creation project.
