Ton Roosendaal
foto Ton Roosendaal  - is chairman of the Blender Foundation and original developer of Blender, the free 3D creation software. Since its release as open source in 2002, Blender has been downloaded millions of times, making it the largest officially installed 3D software tool worldwide. On the wings of Blender Foundation's successful open 3D animation movie "Elephants Dream", Roosendaal founded the Blender Institute in Amsterdam, where the second open movie "Big Buck Bunny" was realized. Currently a team of seven people works in the institute on realizing an Open Game, which is scheduled to launch in August 2008.

Open Source and Open Content in a studio environment

In this presentation, Blender Foundation chairman Ton Roosendaal will talk about the practical consequences of running a commercial production facility based on using exclusively open source for 3D creation, and delivering it all under free and open content licenses. As examples he will show results of past 3D animation work and the new Apricot open game project. Open Source software usually results in substantial cost reduction, but especially it will give small or medium sized studios the power of a large 'in house' development team.
