Lucas van Slegtenhorst started his career within the music industry at BMG as radio plugger/promotor. After two years Roadrunner hired him to work for them as a product manager for their EDEL label (joint venture) and van Slegtenhorst decided to move on to this 'next step.' Within this role he managed to climb up towards a position as A&R manager. Warner Chappell then asked him to work for them as creative manager which he did for two years. At the end of 2001 Chrysalis Music approached van Slegtenhorst to become the General manager for their Benelux set up: Chrysalis Music Benelux (a joint venture with Strengholt) This is where he is still working with a lot of pleasure and having success with both the international and their local roster of songwriters and their songs (BLONDIE, SHANE SHU, ROD TEMPERTON, MOKE, DAVID BOWIE, KRAAK & SMAAK, GNARLS BARKLEY,YONDERBOI, THOM YORKE, GARE DU NORD, SYB VAN DER PLOEG, V2 RECORDS, ALDERLIEFSTE, DEVENDRA BANHART, ALAMO RACE TRACK, THE GOSSIP, CROWDED HOUSE, DAMON ALBARN, EXCELSIOR RECORDINGS, a.o.)
Local bands of Chrysalis Music benelux that had songs in games are:
zZz, MOKE, Janez Detd, Lefties Soul connection, HULK.
Chrysalis Music Benelux is part of the international Chrysalis Music group plc. We represent the copyrights of many great songwriters such as Blondie, David Bowie, Gnarls Barkley, Rod Temperton, Thom Yorke, Paul Anka and local signings: MOKE, Gare du Nord, Yonderboi, Syb van der Ploeg, Shane Shu a.o.
CHRYSALIS MUSIC:
• Chrysalis Music is one the few remaining independent publishers in the UK. Our job as a publisher is to maximise the worldwide use of our copyrights through record sales, concerts, commercials, computer games, film, television the Internet and mobile phones. We now have our own stand alone companies in Germany, Scandinavia, France, Spain, Holland and Italy and the United States. This puts us in a much stronger position to develop and promote our writers worldwide.
The A&R department's objective is to sign writers and artists for the world exclusively to Chrysalis Music. The biggest responsibility the department has is the huge role it plays in the development of an artist's career.
As an independent publisher with a very contemporary roster we like to get involved with writers and artists early on in their career. These artists are either unsigned by the major record companies or they have deals with very small independents, so they look to us for both creative and financial support. Our input varies tremendously depending on the individual needs of the artists.
Our studio is available to all our writers. In this environment they can experiment with ideas and record a number of songs that can later be discussed and reviewed with their A&R person. Others may need to play live and we would assist them in financing a small tour. There are times when it is appropriate for us to finance the release of a single in order to generate media attention and record company awareness. The Chrysalis A&R team has a good relationship with the record industry's A&R community, allowing us to introduce artists and managers to them with a view to securing long term recording contracts.
The other key role in publishing is setting up collaborations between writers. This can produce some very exciting results and instils a certain confidence in the writer who perhaps up until this time has written on her/his own, unaware of the creative potential that a good songwriting partnership can produce. The exploitation of these songs is the responsibility of the professional manager in the A&R department who is in contact with all the major record companies and will "pitch" songs to them on a regular basis. Internationally, we have regular meetings with our colleagues, where we discuss requests and expectations that we would like to see from our partners overseas, for example:
o Licensing deals
o Lyric translations to facilitate local releases
o Securing covers
o Brokering deals with domestic record companies
The publisher's role encapsulates all the areas mentioned above. Its creative expertise is more and more in demand as it becomes apparent that publishing in the 21st century is where the artist's talent is nurtured before the multi-national record companies become involved. Our role as an company is to be involved with our writers and artists on a long term basis and help them to achieve their true potential.
